Flag Tootsie Rolls in a takeout container--both made in the USA--are a sweet way to celebrate patriotic holidays.
Just because it has a flag on it, doesn’t mean it’s American made. I was floored one year to receive a U.S. flag lapel pin with a “Made in China” mark on it. According to the Flag Manufacturers Association of America, there were about $3 million of imported U.S. flags in 2009 and most recent volume of shipments of U.S. flags produced domestically was $301.5 million. So, yes, the majority of U.S. flags are produced here. However, the bigger problem is with non-flag promotions as my lapel pin so clearly showed.
Granted, in many cases, products made in the USA are often higher priced than imports. So when budget push comes to budget shove, many organizations will ditch their “Buy American” priorities and go with imports emblazoned with patriotic themes. In fact, I’ve even seen some unions going with imported promo which they distributed to the public. Ouch!
So to make a statement about your support and commitment to American workers, buy American-made promotional products for patriotic holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day (union made promo, please!), Flag Day, Armed Forces Day, Presidents Day and for efforts that celebrate the United States.
