A New Home for Bailey

As many of you know, in early February, we lost our almost 7 year old golden retriever to complications from lymphoma. This left a void in our house, especially for our 3-year old golden girl, Molly.

Knew we wanted an older dog. Been through the young puppy thing several times and I wanted to provide a home for an animal in need, especially since I do a lot of work with the Friends of DCACC (DuPage County Animal Care & Control), the foundation that supports our county’s only open admission shelter. The shelter is not tax supported and depends on donations, revenues from rabies tags and fines, and events.

BaileySince my friends at the Friends of DCACC were well aware of our family’s loss, they alerted me when they took in a young male golden that was about a year old. The newly named Bailey has now joined our family. And he has quite a story already…

A few weeks ago, Bailey was picked up as an un-microchipped stray by a resident here in the western Chicago suburbs. When they took him in, he was throwing up and could not hold down food. They could not afford the vet diagnostic tests to determine the cause of his troubles, so surrendered him to the DCACC shelter. Turns out he had swallowed a piece of fabric, probably because he was hungry, which had lodged in his digestive tract. He underwent emergency surgery and he is recovering quickly. In fact, when we met him about a week after his surgery, he was already acting like what one of the gals in the rescue community calls a YAM (Young Adult Male. Translation: A Wild & Craaazzy Guy.).

He was now ready to come home to finish recuperating in a home environment before he’s able to undergo his neuter operation and testing and procedures required for finalizing his adoption.

I’m proud to be allied with the Friends of DCACC and the DCACC Shelter. We are in the process of planning one of the main fundraising events for this year which is the Friends Fur-Ever Festival, scheduled for Saturday, June 12. It will be held on the county grounds next to the shelter and will include a dog wash, pet entertainment, food, and fun. It will once again being sponsored by 95.9 The River Radio and a host of other great companies. The Friends Fur-Ever Festival is a new combined event that used to be the two separate events of the spring Pet Expo and summer Dog Wash ‘N Walk. Proceeds from the event will go directly to help homeless pets.

Friends of DCACC has as its long-term goal to fund the construction of a new state-of-the-art facility for DuPage County Animal Care & Control.  This new facility will allow DCACC to operate efficiently, provide much-needed space for humane education programs & services, and allow for the compassionate care, socialization and housing of the ever-growing population of unwanted and abandoned animals in DuPage County, Illinois.

What a great photo of Bailey boy. He actually looks like he’s smiling in this picture! I wonder if he’s finally realized he hit the jackpot and found himself the best possible home. I hope Molly loves her new brother. We look forward to seeing more Bailey updates – I think he’s our first alum to have his own blog!

Thanks, Kristie, for your kind comments. Bailey is settling in nicely already. After having to remind him who’s boss a couple times, Molly’s definitely getting comfortable with her new little bro around. She keeps wanting to engage him in wild running around play in the yard. A few more weeks recuperating and they’ll be able to do that. Appreciate everyone’s help at Friends of DCACC and the shelter in making this happen!

Thanks Kathy! I will always remember this St. Pat’s Day since that’s when you and I started making the arrangements for this connection. Maybe we should make that his lucky birthday day since we don’t know when his official b-day is. Have a terrific day!

The picture is almost as precious as what he looks like in person! Bailey is a lucky guy. He found the best home he could have imagined. Casey is smiling from doggie heaven.
